What traditional costume trends will be popular in 2026?

Bright, radiant colors have arrived in dirndls. Linen and cotton dominate the materials, with new colors emerging from production: Hunter green, known from typical hunting jackets, transforms into a trendy lime green; subtle blue notes become a soft aqua; and rose colors turn into a vibrant magenta. Red and olive with elaborately printed skirts remain the theme this summer. For dirndl blouses, the classic cotton blouse is replacing lace, and the flutter-sleeve blouse is an absolute trend.

Matching accessories, such as the hairband, hand-knitted dirndl vests, or linen jackets, complete every outfit.
Otherwise, traditional clothing relies on tradition – this is also the case for men: classic jackets with fine leather trousers, complemented by matching linen shirts and colorful socks. A fine shoe completes the men's outfit.

Wearing traditional clothing is a way of life that is not only enjoyed at festivals, but is also making a comeback in everyday life!

The History of the Lederhosen

Especially in western Austria, there are region-specific leather pants. The Salzkammergut region is certainly the most famous, where leather pants are hand-embroidered. Emperor Franz Joseph, for example, liked to wear leather pants while hunting in Ischl, and the traditional costume was thus favored by the aristocracy. Today, goat suede and deerskin are preferred for the leather.

Socks or calf warmers?

Trachtenstutzen are handcrafted by Original Salzburger in Waldviertel. Originally, socks, stutzen, and Loferl served to cover bare skin, especially when going to church.

Fashionable Shoe Trends 2026 for Her & Him

Traditionally, the Haferlschuh is worn with lederhosen, and an elegant shoe with a Trachtenspange (traditional shoe buckle). Nowadays, any shoe that catches your eye – and is above all comfortable – can be worn with both lederhosen and dirndls...

For what occasion, the right Dirndl?

Traditionally, long dirndls are worn for elegant occasions such as balls or weddings. Nowadays, the knee-length of 70cm has replaced the long dirndl, and at folk festivals, fairs, and Oktoberfest, lengths of 50 to 60cm are mainly worn.

Accessories

Any accessories like matching hats and traditional jewelry are very trendy. It's also becoming more fashionable to wear „old“ jewelry with modern traditional clothing. Color-coordinated leather bags are very popular.
