Dirndl & Regions – how many different traditional costumes are there?
There are more than 800 traditional costumes in Austria. The history of the Dirndl dates back to the 19th century. Its origin lies in Austria and Bavaria. In the past
Dirndls were once workwear, with each federal state having its own typical regional costume. Today, the Dirndl has established itself as fashionable attire for festivals, traditions, weddings, and church services. Thus, a Dirndl belongs in every woman's wardrobe to be perfectly dressed for any event… After years of glittery Dirndls, manufacturers are placing increasing importance on natural materials and new simplicity.
2. Lederhosen and their history
Especially in western Austria, there are region-specific leather pants. The Salzkammergut region is certainly the most famous, where leather pants are hand-embroidered. Emperor Franz Joseph, for example, liked to wear leather pants while hunting in Ischl, and the traditional costume was thus favored by the aristocracy. Today, goat suede and deerskin are preferred for the leather.
3. What are Loferl?
Trachtenstutzen are handcrafted by Original Salzburger in Waldviertel. Originally, socks, stutzen, and Loferl served to cover bare skin, especially when going to church.

5. On what occasions, what dirndl length?
Traditionally, long dirndls are worn for elegant occasions such as balls or weddings. Nowadays, the knee-length of 70cm has replaced the long dirndl, and at folk festivals, fairs, and Oktoberfest, lengths of 50 to 60cm are mainly worn.
6. Accessories
Accessories, such as matching hats and traditional jewelry, are very trendy. It is also becoming more fashionable to wear „vintage“ jewelry with modern traditional clothing. Color-coordinated leather bags are very trendy.
