    Interesting Facts About Traditional Costumes

Dirndl & Regions – how many different traditional costumes are there?

There are more than 800 traditional costumes in Austria. The history of the Dirndl dates back to the 19th century. Its origin lies in Austria and Bavaria. In the past
Dirndls were once workwear, with each federal state having its own typical regional costume. Today, the Dirndl has established itself as fashionable attire for festivals, traditions, weddings, and church services. Thus, a Dirndl belongs in every woman's wardrobe to be perfectly dressed for any event… After years of glittery Dirndls, manufacturers are placing increasing importance on natural materials and new simplicity.

    2. Lederhosen and their history

Especially in western Austria, there are region-specific leather pants. The Salzkammergut region is certainly the most famous, where leather pants are hand-embroidered. Emperor Franz Joseph, for example, liked to wear leather pants while hunting in Ischl, and the traditional costume was thus favored by the aristocracy. Today, goat suede and deerskin are preferred for the leather.

    3. What are Loferl?

Trachtenstutzen are handcrafted by Original Salzburger in Waldviertel. Originally, socks, stutzen, and Loferl served to cover bare skin, especially when going to church.

    4. Foot Fashion – Trends for Women and Men

Traditionally, the Haferlschuh is worn with lederhosen, and an elegant shoe with a traditional buckle is worn. Nowadays, any shoe that appeals – and above all, is comfortable – can be combined with both leather pants and a dirndl...

    5. On what occasions, what dirndl length?

Traditionally, long dirndls are worn for elegant occasions such as balls or weddings. Nowadays, the knee-length of 70cm has replaced the long dirndl, and at folk festivals, fairs, and Oktoberfest, lengths of 50 to 60cm are mainly worn.

    6. Accessories

Accessories, such as matching hats and traditional jewelry, are very trendy. It is also becoming more fashionable to wear „vintage“ jewelry with modern traditional clothing. Color-coordinated leather bags are very trendy.

What traditional costume trends will be popular in 2026?

Bright, radiant colors have arrived in dirndls. Linen and cotton dominate the materials, with new colors emerging from production: Hunter green, known from typical hunting jackets, transforms into a trendy lime green; subtle blue notes become a soft aqua; and rose colors turn into a vibrant magenta. Red and olive with elaborately printed skirts remain the theme this summer. For dirndl blouses, the classic cotton blouse is replacing lace, and the flutter-sleeve blouse is an absolute trend.

Matching accessories, such as the hairband, hand-knitted dirndl vests, or linen jackets, complete every outfit.
Otherwise, traditional clothing relies on tradition – this is also the case for men: classic jackets with fine leather trousers, complemented by matching linen shirts and colorful socks. A fine shoe completes the men's outfit.

Wearing traditional clothing is a way of life that is not only enjoyed at festivals, but is also making a comeback in everyday life!

  • BAUERNLAND Pommes

    FRENCH FRY LAND

    Farmer's Potato Fries

Crispy, golden yellow, and simply delicious: BAUERNLAND fries stand for the highest quality, regional origin, and sustainable production.

Made in Lower Austria from 100% Austrian potatoes, the raw materials come exclusively from over 220 contract farmers in the Weinviertel, Marchfeld, and Burgenland regions. This ensures that the entire value chain remains within the state—a benefit for quality, freshness, and local agriculture.

The farm guarantee combined with the AMA quality seal creates special confidence: it makes the products fully traceable from field to packaging. At the same time, the proximity to the growing regions ensures short transport routes and particularly climate-friendly production. BAUERNLAND also sets a good example in terms of resource conservation: potato leftovers are processed into croquettes and rösti, and peels are used for energy generation in a biogas plant.

The fries are cut from whole potatoes, carefully processed, pre-fried in vegetable oil, and flash-frozen. This ensures optimal preservation of flavor, texture, and nutrients. Whether thin or thick, crinkle-cut or classic – the variety of cut types offers something suitable for every catering application.

With annual sales of around 5,000 tons of French fries, BAUERNLAND is a strong partner for the gastronomy industry – offering honest enjoyment with origin, quality, and responsibility from Austria.
